The Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC) reported a magnitude 6.0 quake in Greece near Ierapetra, Lasithi, Crete, 33 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Wednesday, May 14th, 2025, at 1:51 am local time at a shallow depth of 27.80 km. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Ierapetra (pop. 12,400) located 116 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
