Significant magnitude 5.2 earthquake 97 km northwest of Luganville, VanuatuJust 8 minutes ago, a 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck near Luganville, Sanma Province, Vanuatu. The tremor was recorded late at night on Sunday, December 7th, 2025, at 11:16 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 10. km below the surface.
The event was filed by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the first seismological agency to report it.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Port-Olry (pop. 1,300) located 50 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Hog Harbour (pop. 1000) located 59 km from the epicenter, and Luganville (pop. 13,400) 97 km away.
