A shallow magnitude 2.9 earthquake was reported early morning near Nurtingen, Regierungsbezirk Stuttgart, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Tuesday, December 9th, 2025, at 3:50 am local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Beuren (pop. 3,500) located 2 km from the epicenter, Nurtingen (pop. 40,200) 8 km away, Kirchheim unter Teck (pop. 40,200) 8 km away, Metzingen (pop. 22,100) 11 km away, Filderstadt (pop. 43,600) 17 km away, Reutlingen (pop. 112,600) 19 km away, Esslingen (pop. 92,400) 20 km away, and Goeppingen (pop. 58,000) 22 km away. In Stuttgart (pop. 630,300, 29 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
