A moderately shallow magnitude 5.8 earthquake was reported early evening near Nemuro, Nemuro-shi, Hokkaido, Japan.
According to Japan’s National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), the quake hit on Tuesday, December 2nd, 2025, at 7:03 pm local time at a moderately shallow depth of 46.80 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Hamanaka-sakuraminami (pop. 5,500) located 36 km from the epicenter, Nemuro (pop. 31,200) 42 km away, Akkeshi (pop. 8,900) 50 km away, Nakashibetsu (pop. 24,000) 77 km away, Shibecha (pop. 7,200) 81 km away, Shibetsu (pop. 21,700) 82 km away, and Kushiro (pop. 167,900) 89 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
